Sangertown Square

Sangertown Square is regional shopping mall located in New Hartford, New York between New York State Route 5 and Route 8 near Utica, New York. Sangertown Square is a single-story mall, and comprises over 800,000 square feet (74,000 m2) of leasable retail space. The mall was built in 1980 and has about 80 stores and a central food court. The mall's primary anchor tenants are located within four wings, including Sears, which is slated to close in 2015, JCPenney, Macy's and Target, while additional anchor stores include Dick's Sporting Goods, H&M and DSW Shoe Warehouse. Original tenants within the mall included Bradlees and Friendly's, which closed in 2001 and 2013, respectively. The mall is owned by The Pyramid Companies, who also own other malls in Upstate New York such as Destiny USA, the Walden Galleria and Poughkeepsie Galleria.
== History ==
In 2005, the mall's once sunken center court was elevated, and brick ornamentation around its food court columns were removed.
In 2007, the unique "boulder" fountain in front of JCPenney was buried with wood chips and artificial vegetation. All of the globular tinted glass torches have been removed due to remodeling which occoured in June 2013. There was originally a fountain within the food court, but it was later removed due to noise issues. The fountain in front of the Sears entrance was removed as well in the early 2000s. The only current fountain is in front of the Macy's entrance. In the summer of 2013, the "boulder" fountain in front of JC Penny was removed. The last remaining fountain in front of Macy's is due to be removed as well. The mall has had many entertainment options over the years, but in recent time many have gone away. The only arcade closed in late 2011 for construction of DSW. The last sit-down restaurant, Friendly's, closed in January, 2013, bringing other smaller food stores along such as Gerturde Hawk and Chicken Now, leaving only 7 restaurants.
Stores which have closed include Hoyts Cinema, Old Navy, Circuit City, GameStop and Friendly's in 2013, Hess's and Kaufmann's. On April 8, 2015, Sears announced that it would be closing its Sangertown Square store.〔http://www.uticaod.com/article/20150408/NEWS/150409451〕
There have been several plans to expand Sangertown Square, but many have never been initiated to completion. Past plans included a 1998 expansion and retrofit for Sears and JC Penney, as well as construction of a 900 space parking garage and the proposed 2004 ThEATery.
In 2014, work to modernize Sangertown Square began, which includes new seating, decorative lightning, new tile, exterior entrances, and an improved landscape. Another addition will be Buffalo Wild Wings opening in the Circuit City building.
In 2015, Sears has closed its doors, also Express
